If you take taps off of a character tap shoe, can you still use it?

I might be able to use my sister's old character shoes, but I want to know if it's alright to unscrew the taps and just use it without them.

You can unscrew them just fine.  It's not going to hurt the shoes.  But it might hurt you!  If you're going to be on a carpeted or marley floor, you'll be fine.  But if you are going to be on hardwood, tile, ceramic, or an other slick surface, you need to have a shoe repair man to re-sole the heel and toe.  Or he can just replace the taps with rubber or a like material.  This will add friction which will help you to not fall.  I've had it done before and my local shoe repair guy only charged me $12 for both shoes.  It's inexpensive and worth the repair.

you can do that but you have to have a tailor or something put rubber soles on the bottom of the heels and toes of each shoe so you don't slip
