  1. UNSW (Randwick, Sydney) is the best uni in Australia. It also has the highest fees and is hardest to get into. (also very crowded, I have many friends there)

There is plently of student housing around UNSW.

Other than that, Macquarie University (North Ryde, Sydney) is very good as well. I did a physics course there.

  2. They are all well respected.  New South Wales and Sydney especially so.   ANU is a good university, but is in Canberra, so rule that out straight away.  There is an opinion shared by some (not the writer) that University of Queensland is not as good as people in the north are slower.

So I would choose between Sydney and New South Wales (both in Sydney) and see which would best fit in with your desired postgrad studies.  Sydney is the best place to live.

EDIT - I see from a previous question you want to do electrical engineering - try UTS - University of Technology Sydney - an excellent uni too.
