  1. there are several forms of diabetes. if you mean "wee smell of pear drops" as sweet smelling urine, then you probably mean diabetes mellitus which may be Type I or Type II. Type II diabetes usually appears later in life while Type I as early as below your 20's.

the most effective way of knowing whether your a diabetic or not is to go to a doctor and have your blood sugar checked or you can also monitor your blood sugar using a glucometer which involves pricking your finger a little bit and have a device read the blood sugar level in your blood. and even if you have a huge hunch that you are diabetic and you manifest several signs and symptoms of this condition, it is BEST for you to see a doctor because this disorder involves an imbalance (in insulin production and/or utilization and thereby an imbalance in blood sugar levels, ) which is best managed with the help of a physician/doctor plus a registered/certified nutritionist because management [it will never be treated, just managed...=(... ] involves drugs, lifestyle changes (appropriate diet and exercise).

signs of symptoms of diabetis mellitus however are:

    polydipsia - excessive thirst

    polyphagia - excessive uncontrolled eating

polyuria - excretion of abnormally large quantity of urine

    weight loss --

hyperglycemia - blood sugar levels increased more than normal

glycosuria - abnormal presence of a sugar, especially glucose, in the urine

  2. If I understand your question, you're asking if diabetes will make your sweat and urine smell "sweet".  Yes, it can.

And this is a really bad sign -- IT CAN BE FATAL!  Your family member needs to make an appointment with a doctor IMMEDIATELY, even consider a trip to the Emergency Room.

The "sweet smell" could be "ketones", a toxic byproduct of digesting too much protein.  This usually happens when the patient has reached ketoacidosis.  !!THIS CAN BE FATAL!!  One of the methods of  diagnosis is a sweet smelling breath.

There should be NO ketones in the uring or the sweat.  The kidneys should filter this out normally.  The sweet-snelling uring may indicate that the kidneys are failing.

I'm not a doctor.  I could be completely wrong. [I hope I am completely wrong!]  But it would be better to make an urgent trip to the doctor and have them check blood sugar, blood pH, urine albumin, and ketones just to make sure.
