  1. Not according to Mythbusters.  They aren't halfway scientific in a lot of their testing, but they pretty well convinced me on this one.

That said, why take a chance?

  2. You would have a better chance of producing a spark if you rubbed a wool sweater continuously on the car and caused static electricity.  Most cell phone circuit boards are sealed and they produce enough power to produce this spark.

  3. It IS possible, hence the warning signs..but it's very unlikely.

It can ignite the gas somehow.

  4. uh. no.

  5. No. It has been proven on Myth Busters. It takes a considerable amount of gas vapor's to cause an explosion, a cell phone doesn't carry enough current to cause a grounding spark, so no, ka-boom!

  6. No.  There is an episode of Mythbusters that covers this, and they had a really hard time getting the phone to ignite the gas, and that was in a chamber full of gas fumes.

  7. To date, the FDA - which monitors gas station explosions and accidences - has not found a cell phone or pager to be the cause of a single fire or explosion.  Test have shown that neither produce enough of a spark to be able to ground the charge allowing for an explosion.

Mythbuster tried several times to blow up a car using a cell phone, and were not successful.  They even enclosed the car in a plastic tent to increase the amount of fumes, and put the phone right over the gas hole, and could not produce an explosion.

They were, however, about to blow up the car by getting into the car while the gas was being pumped.  The fraction of sliding across the seat produced enough static electricity to blow up the car.
