Mainly i believe it has to do with what you can tolerate, such as taking shots of liquor vs chugging beer. All in all liquor is quicker but hard to take, and beer requires a large quantity.  So i usually go with a happy medium of wine, you can mix 3/4 glass of red wine with 1/4 cola and get what chileans call "tin-cola" drinking it quickly will help get you to where you want to be.
