If you want to teach English, how do you demonstrate that you know the subject?

I know this sounds like a dumb question, but I am really interested in teaching English and my major requires that you demonstrate that you understand the subject matter in order to get credentialed....to any English teachers out there, how did you prepare to be knowledgable in this subject in order to teach it well? Thanks! Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)
