Like, what college major? What would you study?

What are some things you could go about doing BEFORE college to prepare for such an occupation?

  1. Music technology would be a good idea. Try to get an internship at a recording studio. Before you try though, get a basic idea of what's going on. Try recording your own stuff at home on a DAW. Learn the basics. You should understand what we're talking about when we say EQ, master, envelope, etc.

Recording isn't the only career possible in record studios. I know a few people who majored in media marketing and similar majors. Physics and electrical engineering may be useful as well if you're into that stuff.

If you're just managing artists, then media marketing might be a good idea. Either way, you'll want to get an internship at a record company or get some experience as a club promoter.

  2. I think it would be general business with focus on entertainment and marketing. Or people management. If you really want to be cool you can study entertainment law.

I know many people who work at different record labels in LA, and they all come from different backgrounds -- one studied medicines, another studied dancing, etc.

It's all about how you get in, more than what you study, honestly. Yeah, that's hard... You might have to start at the bottom (mail room, which is so old school) or just know someone in the industry. Start with a small label. This industry can be a bit frustrating, sometimes.

  3. New York talent agency for one.
