If you went to a restaurant would you perfer your waitress to .....?

Question

ask you if you want a straw for your drink and butter for your bread, or do you think this should be an automatic? Your opinion counts, want to show this to my boss.

I hate using a straw and wish they would ask.

Same with butter.  Many people I run with are kissing butter behind.  It can be better used by a butter lover.  

Its a small thing, but in a world of blatant overconsumtion, cutting back even in small ways is good.

And people love to feel like they get what they ask for.

The waitress should ask because many people have a strong preference and might be upset one way or the other.

Butter should be automatic, straws should depend on the type of drink.  If it's water or iced tea, give a straw automatically.  However, if it's beer or wine, only if they ask (which would be weird).  Straws only cost, what, like a cent in bulk, and if you give a little square of butter and they don't open it, you can probably still reuse it, so there really is no disadvantage.

Butter should always come with bread, but I should be asked if I would like a straw.  Of course, if I'm having something that a person wouldn't usually use a straw with (say, a beer), then it would be up to me to ask.  I like the waitress to ask if I want a straw - it shows that she's trying to make our dining experience enjoyable and it usually gets her a bigger tip than if I have to ask for a straw or she just plops a couple straws down in the middle of the table.  Such a little thing can set the tone for the rest of the meal - so it should be a good one.
