If you were GM and needed a goalie, who would you sign?

Say your team is set but its one glaring weakness was goalie. Your best prospect in the minors is just not ready and is a backup at best. You don't wish to trade any draft picks, players, or prospects and just want to plug the roster spot up with a free agent signing. The July 1st free agency signing is about to start and the available goalies are Jose Theodore, Cristobal Huet, or Ray Emery. Which goalie would you make it a priority to sign and why?

  1. Not too many good names out there. Huet is portably the best with Theodore coming in second. And if you were desperate and wanted to take a chance you could take Emery. Isnt Roloson a free agent? When he's on, he's one of the best. Remember the game against San Jose? The one that ended the streak? Those that know that game know that Roloson can be one bada** m**o.

  2. I would say Cristobal Huet because he helped lead the Capitals   to their first playoffs after starting the season with a horrible record.  Jose Theodore's close to retiring and you would maybe get one or two seasons out of him and Ray Emery is just washed up because he hasn't been playing like he did two seasons ago in Ottawa.

  3. Cristobal Huet is definitely the best of the trio. I would love it if the Avs signed him. He had a couple of really great games in the playoffs with the Caps (who aren't exactly a defensive powerhouse), and I just think he's a little underrated. I wouldn't want Theodore because I already know what that can possibly lead to (lots and lots of sucking, followed by a short 3 month period of great play, followed by "wanting to test the FA market"). And I wouldn't want Emery because he is just not a proven goalie. I wouldn't even look at his "issues" (which have been blown out of proportion), I just don't think he's good enough to be a successful #1. Whatever my team is, I wouldn't think they are as loaded as the Senators were when Emery took them to the Finals. So, yeah, Huet is the clear choice in my opinion.

  4. I believe that Theodore is the best of these names; however.. he is starting to get the knock that CuJo has that he can't win the big games.

Huet is still relatively unproven and hasn't had a real shot with a solid team in front of him. He knew he wasn't the guy in Montreal long term and it was no secret.

Emery would be a great fit in LA or Florida where nobody really cares about hockey. His off-ice antics were too publicised in Canada and that hurt his reputation.

All-in-all... I'd go with Huet or Theodore... whichever signs for the better price.

  5. Cristobal Huet, he is amazing, enough said. LOL

  6. Of the three, I'd probably look at Huet.  Having watched a ton of Northeast Division games I really can't speak too well to Theodore (someone mentioned something about him having a history of 'playing' for a contract, so you probably have to keep him on a 1-2 year deal); as to Emery...what you see is what you get.  "If" you have a disciplined team with a strong leadership core, you might pick him up on the cheap (where the core of the team could keep him in line).  Huet does not appear to need babysitting; not really sure why Washington hasn't resigned him since tomorrow is July 1st.

Seeing Price play for Montreal, it made sense to get something for Huet, but if you're Washington...that team is loaded to win now.  Why you'd s***w around is beyond me.

  7. Huet is solid and can hold down the fort until the young kid is ready to play.

  8. I would go after Huet hands down. He had a great SV% last eyar which is the most important stat to have for a goaltender (also could be the reason Nabokov didn't win Vezina).

He had .920 SV% in the Eastern Conference, where defense is not as good as the West.

Jose is a good goaltender too, but the SV% doesn't show as good as Huet. Theodore is also at times very inconsistant which can drive a team absolutely CRAZY. Remember those good games vs the Wild, he played great, 12 goals allowed in 6 games. But in the 2nd round he gave up 15 goals in 4 games.

    _/\__/\__/\__/\__/\__/\__/\__   <--   Inconsistancy.

    As for Emery,

  9. I'd go with Huet!!!

  10. Huet.  Because he's good comes without loosing any draft picks or prospects, and the caps have a GREAT shot at landing him.
