For the sake of this question, you have become a the boss. Now you have the power to hire and fire people. One of the people who works with you rubs you the wrong way. It is nothing she says, but just a case of bad chemistry. You simply do not like her. She works hard and does good work, but you just do not like her.

Is this good enough reason to fire her?

  1. I am an employer so this isn't much of a stretch for me.  I'm pretty easy to get along with so putting up with other's peculiarities isn't difficult.   If they are bothering me, they are probably not getting along well with other employees or clients.  When that becomes obvious, they will have to go.

I don't know where some of you live but where I live, you don't have to give a reason to terminate an employee.

  2. legally i dont think so. but my theory is, you can fire anyone and come up with a "good" reason.

  3. You could possibly fire her if you want too but some legal issues may get in the way. Also people may get suspicious if they knew you didn't like her.

  4. depends upon her behind

  5. Yes, if you wanna get sued. You can't legally fire someone just b/c you don't like them. There has to be a good reason.

  6. I've been a manager for several decades.  I would not fire someone only because of bad chemistry.  A good manager learns how to deal with all kinds of personalities, and uses their strengths. I would not want other employees feeling that they could be let go on a whim, regardless of their performance.  That would have a negative impact on employee morale and, in turn, employee productivity.

  7. no.  performance in your business is most important.

  8. Is there something about her personality that causes damage to the business or causes the boss to do something unproductive?  The business has to feel an impact for a termination to happen.

  9. How does she rub you the wrong way?  If it doesn't affect the job you need to be professional and deal with it.  If it bothers you that much go ahead and fire her, h**l YOU'RE THE BOSS.  But be honest with yourself about what is bothering you.

  10. No.  I think that's unprofessional and personal.  If the person is a good worker...you have to suck up your distaste for the person's personality and do the right thing.

  11. If she works hard and does good work. You will have to find alot of other things that are legal reason to build a case for dismissal.i.e. misconduct, theft, harassement, etc.

  12. I've dealt with people like you before. I f*cking hate people like you. No, you should not fire her because your emotional state is unstable.

  13. Merely dislike? No. If the situation was so unpleasant that it effected productivity, certainly. Or if she wore a rainbow clown wig.

  14. Philosophically, it is better to put the "greater good" ahead of your personal animosity, but legally you COULD fire anyone you want. So, my first choice would be to try to work together and overlook the minor irritations from being rubbed the wrong way.

On the other hand, a person can be fired for no reason at all, in most places, unlike what most of the earlier replies incorrectly stated.

Root for the wrong sports teams on my loading dock and you're fired. Perfectly legal (other than commie union c**p that says otherwise).

  15. No it is not.

Sometimes in life we have to tolerate people we don't like.

It is against the law to fire someone just because your personalities clash.

  16. I would fire the employee if they were not productive.

  17. nope. that's incredibly illegal.

  18. no way if you do that you can get fired its called discrimination and its against  the law for you to do that and remember your in the real world now not high school...just get over it...be happy you have someone that does good work...nowadays that is hard to find
