I'm going to have my first pap next week.. I'm a bit scared. I am sure it will be uncomfortable (hopefully not too painful). I am a virgin & have never used tampons. My hymen is fairly thick.. Will getting a pap stretch or break my hymen? thx for any input, especially anyone who has been in a similar situation..it's greatly appreciated. ps- I realize most don't get it done til their sexually active, but I'm 21. And they say whichever comes first, having s*x or being 21 you have to start getting it done. So i know it's important to check on your female parts. And yes i know this is in wrong category sortof, but i want to get some answers on this darn question. thnks

  1. No, I didn't, but I know girls who did have some spotting.

I went to a Hebrew high school, so many of the girls waited to have s*x until they married, and went to the doctor before they were sexually active.

Tell the doctor or the nurse that you're a virgin and ask them to use the smallest speculum and additional lubrication. That should minimize discomfort.

Also, ask them to explain exactly what they'll be doing before they do it, and while they're doing it so that you know what to expect.

  2. I had a pelvic exam December 18th 2006 when I also took a pregnancy test at 19 years old.  Sadly the pregnancy test was negative.  I got the pelvic exam because my husband was concerned about me bleeding a lot(I was on my period at the time) and we had just been walking around in the zoo all day.  He was scared I would faint.  It hurts if you tense up.  It hurt me and I'm no longer a virgin. I think they might have a smaller speculum to use for virgins. Just shut your eyes, and try not to tense up when the doctor does the exam.

  3. I bled a little bit and I was pregnant. She said it was because I was tensing up and pinching myself with the "tong" she put in. So...ya! Don't tense up.

  4. It should not break your hymen and neither will using tampons.  Your nurse/doctor will explain the whole process to you and talk you through it so you'll be less nervous.  You could spot a little but it's nothing to worry about.

  5. you shouldn't bleed because the nurse is supposed to keep it very lubricated. When i had my first pap, i didn't even notice it going in because she had put so much pressure on my stomach area. They are trained to perform this task to where it doesn't hurt and if it does, let them know and they can stop what they are doing. Its not even that long of a process. SHe will have you take a deep breath... pop it in take a swab and make sure everything is a-ok. then thats that. Dont worry, you will be fine.
