If you were an baseball umpire what would you call this play??

So a player singles into center field. Then then the next batter hits a fly ball into right field, right to the right fielder and then he catches it. But the runner on 1st base just stands 2 inches away from the bag and the pitcher takes the ball to the mound and gets ready for the next pitch, but that whole time the pitcher was getting ready the runner didnt touch the bag. Then the runner takes his lead like normally, and the pitcher, instead of throwing to the plate he picks off to 1st base. And the first baseman takes the ball like a second baseman threw it to him on a ground ball. And he catches it. But the runner slides into the base like a normal pick.

So its your call, is he out or safe?????

  1. I think he might be out if the umpire noticed he did not touch the bag.

He slided in after the first baseman catch te pick off or not?

  2. OUT! In softball you are automatically out. so i would say he is out

  3. He's out because play had resumed when the pitcher stepped on the mound with ball in hand. It would be no different than if the runner was getting ready to steal second. If he was leaning off of the bag it's a pickoff whether he touched the bag with his single or not if he's tagged before he can get back to the base he's out but it seems to me the pitcher would have to go in to his stretch before he could turn and throw it to the first basemen beause that could be called a balk. It's like the one guy said their are several variables that could happen

Geting a runner out by failing to touch a bag only applys if he would have missed the bag at first and was standing on second. Then they could walk over and tag him out or throw the ball to second and tag him. More than likely one of the umpires saw him miss the bag on first and would call him out once the tag was made.. This does happen from time to time.

  4. Did the runner reach the bag ahead of the tag? If so, he's safe. It's irrelevant that the runner failed to retouch his base after the catch, because the defense must appeal the infraction intentionally. There is no such thing as an accidental appeal.

  5. he safe. he dosent tag runner in that whole thing.

you have to do an appeal if the ball is caught and felider dosent re tag bag.

  6. umpires dont tell runners they need to tag, but if he really didnt touch 1st he still would have been out at first. they threw to 2nd just in case.

  7. if he was tagged before he touched the bag it out no matter what

  8. if the umpire ignored the no touch bag thenhes safe other wise he was out when the picther threw the ball to first unless the first baseman did not touch the bag either so ther are a couple of posabities there

  9. I worked minor league ball for three years -- here is the correct answer.

The pickoff play is not the unmistakeable act of appeal.  Thus it is treated as any other pickoff play.  Judge the play on safe/out as to whether the tag is applied in time.

In pro rules you must have the unmistakeable act of appeal to have the paly you describe.  HS rules depends on the state's individual interpretation of the appeal play rules.

  10. i am a baseball umpire and he would be safe if it was a pick off move

but if it was an appeal he would be called out if the ump saw it and decided to call it (which he probably wouldn't because it would be a huge argument waiting to happen)

  11. If I am getting this right, After the catch the runner never touched first.  the pitcher threw to the first baseman standing on the bag and received the throw before the runner returned.

If that's it, I see him as being out for failking to return to the base after a fly out.  The play from the fly ball should still be going on as it wasn't completely ended.

This is not an appeal play, just continuation of the same play.

  12. Safe

  13. That would be a safe in my Opinion but, everyone has their own opinion. What's yours lol??

  14. if he wasnt tagged hes safe otherwise if he was tagged hes out no mater wat

  15. out
