If you were hiring employees for a position and an applicant were a marine, how would this affect their potential at being hired?

a. improve chance

b. no effect

c. decrease chance

Also, if you were an employer in a certain field and would not hire a marine because you feel that their history/personality would be wrong for the position, which field/position would that be?

Employers- Have you ever not hired anyone because of military history, specifically the marine corps?

****I ask this because my friend thinks that Marines close doors on employment opportunities due to their personality stereotype. Just seeing how others feel.

  1. I have found most employers are more than happy to hire former Marines. They know they are getting a person who knows what needs to be done without constant supervision and has leadership skills.

  2. I am a Retired Marine and have been on both sides of the table. An employee is violating the law if they don't hire you based on being a Marine and Veterans preference plays a vital role if qualified for the position.

Prior military opens many doors also because of the Honesty,Commitment and Leadership that you can bring to a company.

My first few jobs aftering retiring were owned by Vets so the door was open.

As a Owner of a small business I have 10 employees and 9 of them are prior service.

It makes my work that much easier and I can delegate responsabilty because of the trust that I have in them.

In my case, I could hire 1 Marine to 10 civiilians and the task still would be accomplished quicker!

    Semper Fi!

    This also includes other Branches!

  3. I own my own concrete company and can hardly find good workers. I would be more than happy to hire a Marine, because I would think that they are not afraid of hard work. They would know how to take orders and they would have respect for authority. The average young people I find to hire have no responsibility. Want more pay, but show no initiative to learn. They have an attitude that I owe them something just because they showed up.

    Hoo Rah

  4. A GOOD employee is found and then trained, guided and molded into a GREAT employee!

I have been an HR manager, Training manager and Operations manager.  I prefer a Marine, Sailor, Airman, Soldier or Coast Guardsman over a civilian EVERY DAY!

(FYI:  I have also hired an Ex-Con fresh from San Quentin, best d**n shuttle driver that I EVER hired. He is now a regional manager for the Alpha Graphics company because someone saw a professional in that soul)

    BACK to TOPIC:

When you hire a Military veteran, you are USUALLY (but not always) getting a person that has Dedication, Discipline, can pay attention to detail and they are used to inconvenience so when there is a problem, they resolve to solve an ISSUE immediately rather than have it wait until the following work day.

I have NOT hired people based on their DD-214 if it has a crappy code or if drugs were involved at ANY TIME in their career.

"Your Friend knows JACK SH*T!"  That's how I feel!

  5. "Employers- Have you ever not hired anyone because of military history, specifically the marine corps?"

    Thats illegal

  6. a. Marines make exceptional leaders

  7. i have hired some former military people...two actually..one was navy he was one of the best guys ever..the other was an army guy..biggest fup in the world..he simply didnt care ...i think marines are like anyone else..you get some good employees and some c**p ones....being a former marine isnt going to change who the person is basically...if they were an fup in the military they are gonna be an fup in the civilian world as well

  8. After Vietnam ,soldiers were given the opportunity to go to work with various civilian employers as on the job training for a period of two years.  During this training period the military paid a part of my weekly pay. All doors are open, all you have to do is step forward and be counted.

  9. 1. Discriminating based on on a person's military background would be illegal

    2. My boyfriend's still in the Corps and has had several job offers from private companies for when he gets out (his original MOS is a financial advisor)

  10. Depends on the job, and what else the person brings to the table. But I would take into consideration that to be a Marine means that he has shown qualities like dedication, toughness, and an ability to follow directions. Those would be a plus.
