  1. It should have been finalized in Indiana.

  2. The finalization usually takes place in the adoptive parents state of residence, currently. Things may have been done differently years ago, though, so you may want to check both states.

  3. Check in both states.  Infant adoption is supposed to take place in the state of birth, but this is not always true.

  4. That depends on the state laws.  You'll need to talk to a lawyer.  Some states require the adoption to take place in both states.  Some states even require a THIRD legal proceeding for interstate adoption, along with the adoption in both states.  I have heard of legal troubles with finalizing adoptions because some obscure adoption law was not followed in one of the states.  You may want to get a very experienced lawyer in BOTH states, just to be sure.

  5. Actually, it depends.  I was born in one state, taken to another state by my 1st mom & adopted in that state at the age of 3.  The 2nd state handled the adoption, so my adoption records are in that state.

If you were adopted at birth or shortly after, it's quite likely that the adoption records are in the same state as your birth.  Without more info, it's hard to give a definitive answer.

    All the best...

PS:My a.parents lived in a different state altogether when I was born!  (Military family)  My a.parents names appear on my amended birth certificate.

BTW: 6 states provide adoptees with a copy of their ORIGINAL birth certificate upon request.  The state you were born may be what matters most!

  6. In the State where the Adoptive parents resided at the time (so it would have been the court in Indiana) You could write the Court and ask for a copy of your Adoption Order

The birth certificate would have been filed in Illinois though.   If you are looking for information about your adoption contact the Dept of Health in the State where you were born:
