  1. ... money... (its the lightest thing I can think of lol)

  2. pencils

  3. Don't take things that would compete with local businesses trying to make their living. And nothing that would catch the eye and the ire of local custom officials, who might get the impression you are trying to sell things in their country without a license to do so and without paying import fees.

A paperbacks (novels, dictionaries, workbooks, technical manuals) would be appreciated by any schools or fledgling libraries. Pens are always something children appreciate, either to use or to sell (don't take so many that  customs agents think you are selling such). Bicycle repair kits go over very well. Work gloves. And the luggage itself -- consider taking two bags on your trip but leaving with just one.

For cultural reasons, used clothing is not always appreciated. But practical things like winter gloves almost always are.

I took a few happy face fly swatters that a company here was throwing away to Afghanistan, and gave them as gifts to various people, and they thought they were the greatest things ever -- I wish I had brought more and given them to street kids to sell. It was such a goofy thing, but they *loved* it.

  4. Candies.. like 2-3 bags.. the kind that had like 50 pieces of gums in them.. It's not stuff they can afford, and you can give a piece of gum to kids you meet, make them feel better, blow bubbles, make them laugh..

Or some sort of polaroid, you take a picture of them and give it to them after for them to keep cause it's not stuff they can afford.

  5. Money and Medicine.

Spend money buying them things in the poor country, not here. That will help their local economy by you buying things from their local business and help the local businessmen and their little town can grow.

  6. Shoes. They could fold down flat and pack in pretty tight to fit many.

  7. hmm... soap, notebooks, candies, flip flops (dollar store), pencils.

  8. Money for food & clothing.
