  1. From a military point of view - Geography. You need to plan your defense.

    From a socio-economic viewpoint - Culture.


  2. A nation is a social and cultural group of like-minded people.  Most nations have never been defined by geographic boundaries (political borders). Most of the time they cross geographic borders.  

  3. Ethnic differences, so yeah, culture, and if some land is uninhabited, then use geography there
