Say you were out in the bushlands and you thought you were lost. What are 3 things you could do to try and work out where your position is on the map?

I already have one answer: Look at things surrounding you and identify them on the map.

So please don't say this answer.

Please say at least 1 idea.

Thanks

  1. Well the good old military method is if you can see two distinct points say a tower and road you can figure out the the azimuth to each point and draw back wards at the angle + or - 180 degrees. The point where the lines intersects would be your location. It can be found on 550cord.com with a very cool presentation on land navigation. Good luck with the others.

  2. You are probably not looking for things like: "Ask my hiking partner", "Look at the nearby highway sign" or "Check my GPS unit"..so...

If you couldn't locate/identify any of the surrounding land features on your map, you could climb the highest physical thing around you to search for something.

And, if you couldn't locate/identify any of the surrounding land features on your map, you could at least work out which direction was North, South, East and West. The sun is low in the East in the morning and low in the West in the evening.

You can also find "True North" using an analog watch (one with hands) and a tooth pick or small straight twig:

    In the Southern hemisphere:

        * Place the watch on a level piece of ground.

        * Point the figure 12 towards the sun. For more accuracy, align the shadow cast by the twig with the 12 o'clock line.

        * The North-South line is the line dividing the angle between the hour hand and the 12 o'clock line in half.

In the northern hemisphere point the hour hand in the direction of the sun. The North-South line is again the line dividing the angle between the hour hand and the 12 o'clock line in half.
