  4. A steep slope is depicted by contours close together, but a cliff face would have a contour line with hachures on the downslope side.  (You will also see hachures used to show embankments, such as a slope along the side of a railway line.)

    An overhanging cliff would have the highest contour as a solid line, and the lower contours under the cliff top shown as dashed lines.
