Do you keep your car on? Do you turn it off? Do you try to get out? What are some survival tips.

I just watched on the news this morning that several cars were trapped in an avalanche on a pass in Washington.

  1. warmth is the determaning factor hear....if you have a blankett or any other warm clothes you can reach use them asap....resist turning on your car as much as possible....yes it will warm you up but...it can also kill you with carbon monoxide...the next thing is food and water...water mostly...you go without food longer than water i always keep some basic supplys in my car...water blankett some non perishable fod like chips and snack bars things like that its a good idea if you live in an area that is prone to such things to do so...next thing you want to do is occupy yourself with the thought of getting out of there....one or twice every ten mins or so blow your cars horn...one or two beeps...that lets people who are serching the rubble know your there and alive....do not open your windows or try to force open your doors this can lead to seriouse problems...like letting debris into the area you are...you dont want that....and lastly keep calm and believe that people are looking for you becouse they are...do not run your radio you wil need all the power you have for the horn and engine...when you do turn on the car do so for a limited time...10-15 mins tops...no more too dangerouse...well thats all i can think of...good  luck   god bless

  4. I'd conserve the energy of the car for emergencies only. I thankfully always keep water bottles in my car in case it overheat, and a blanket in the trunk. If I had a knife, I would cut up the upholstery from the cushions and use them to insulate myself. If my seats were leather and I was hungry enough (though I would only use this as a last resort for food) I would eat the leather.

  5. Most people that die in an avalanche die from asphixiation (lack of oxygen) so you would definately want to shut your car off, it probably would be good to get out of the car but if you start to dig how do you know if you are digging yourself deeper or actually twords the surface? I seen a show on avalanche survival last week and they said you have about 7 minutes before you suffocate to death.

  6. get on to the floor on ur car so if it rolls over u wont get crushed

  7. Anyone ever consider breaking the window or sunroof and digging their way out?  Chances are that you are not going to buried very deep in the snow.  You can then use a ski pole, ski, or snowboard to start digging.  I would at least try to punch a pole up to the top of the snow to see how deep you are, and open an air pocket.  Whatever you do, dont turn on your car...Carbon Monoxide will creep up from your car's exhaust, making you really tired, and then kill you.  If you can get a window open and shove a pole up through the snow, you can probably get yourself out, or at least leave the pole sticking out of the snow so rescuers can locate you easily.
