Question:

If you were to write "explicit" poems at the age of fifteen, would that be breaking the law?

I write for a poetry site and recently, another user has verbally attacked myself and a friend for writing poems with explicit and erotic-based content when we are under the age of 18, claiming it to be a federal offense. Now, as the person in question is American, and I am British, I'm not sure whether they're correct or not.

Since this is an international site, answers regarding to all nations would be appreciated.

Thanks guys!

  1. Ever heard of Freedom of Speech?

  2. First, I would challenge this individual to actually CITE the federal law he is claiming you are violating. Many people CLAIM you may be breaking a law but few can actually cite the law. If it is a federal law, it should be XX USC XX Which is Title something, United States Code, Section something.

Also, since you are living in Britain, you can not be charged with breaking a US Law (except in rare instances)

Now, that being said, does your explicit poems depict individuals under the age of 18? If so, then there might be an area of concern that you should change.

  3. That's why people say "stupid American". No, it has never been illegal to write "explicit" or "erotic" content, or any other content for that matter, so long as it isn't libel - which essentially by definition, creative works cannot be. Also even if it were a federal offense as your ignorant acquaintance suggested, nobody would give a ****, since you're in Britain and Britain isn't under federal jurisdiction.

  4. It depends on the rules of the website you were on. I morally don't think a 15 year old has any business writing erotic poetry.
