If a US citizen living and working in Germany (the "tax home") wins a 7-figure US lottery, will the winnings be taxed in both countries? If so, what's a ballpark estimate of the percentage you will end up paying?

  1. Germany takes half, and the US takes half... if you hire a lawyer, he'll want half too!

  2. You will only pay tax to the government in Germany, but you will have to pay tax to take it on the plane back to Germany (money worth over $10,000 US must be declared and departure tax must be payed)

if that happened you would be the most lucky unlucky person

  3. If you won the lotto on one of those wierd adverts, don't collect it Lol, thoise things are crazy. And I think the German government demand import tax if it is quite a bit of money.

  4. did you win the lotto???  COOL I can't imagine you'd have to pay anywhere but where you won the money.... but I know nothing on the matter.  Great problem to have though, right?

  5. Who cares?

I mean the odds of you winning a seven figure lottery are over 150 million to one.  You are more likely to be stuck by lightening twice.

But if this ridiculously unlikely event happens, you'll be able to afford the finest of lawyers to reduce your tax burden to a minimum.
