If you won $7000 on the radio would you give it to World Vision instead of paying off your car?

This morning on Sydney radio station 2DAYFM a caller won $7000 in the $10,000 pop quiz. Then she was given the opportunity to give it all to World Vision to sponsor a child for the next 8 or so years.

She ummed and ahhed about it, then Kyle and Jackie-O got Ray Martin (World Youth Day spokesman) to convince her to give it to charity. She ended up giving it away.

Was it fair to do that? Would you have given it all away?

  1. That is soooo unfair!!!!! Thats like winning it then they are like oh no you cant have it.

    I wouldnt have.

    Dont believe in it anyway.

  2. I would went straight to Crown Casino and put it all on black

  3. This is an interesting story, actually. I've never heard of anything like this. The only time where people actually give away their prize money(that I know of, anyway) are celebrities. Imagine if you're on a game show and won a lot of money (Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?) and was forced to give the money to a charity.

I don't think it's fair that the two guys pressured her on-air to give the money to charity. If she wanted to, she would do it in her own privacy. Also, there are a million different charities around...what if she strongly supports another one? Or, if she desperately needed the money?

I think I would definitely give some of the money to a local charity, but not to that one.

  4. Nope. I would pay off my cay first then give to charity.

  5. No i don't think thats fair, To Co-erce someone into thinking they have won a lump sum and then practically forcing them to give it all up to a charity of the radio station's choice.

If Kyle and Jackie O feel so strongly about World Vision then why do they both insist on living in multi million dollar mansions/apartments in the best suburbs in sydney?

WHy don't they sell them, move into more modest homes and donate the proceeds of the rest of the sale to World Vision!

It appears Kyle and Jackie O just keep sinking to new lows!

  6. I'm actually in a lot of personal debt. If i won that amount of money, it would go straight towards covering my living expenses.

  7. No. I would have bullshitted I was in debt and then kept it. I mean pressuring her was unfair. I'm selfish and would feel bad but seriously. When I get a decent income I will sponsor a child.

  8. The listener could have paid off most of her loan and saved herself thousands of dollars in interest as personal loans have a very high rate of interest.

With the saved interest she could have then sponsored a child.  That way, everyone wins and she doesn't feel bitter (which is a possibility at the thought of not having 7 grand in her pocket) - she has money, the child has money, the bank doesn't get money and she feels happy that she made the decision to sponsor a child without being guilted into it.

  9. i don't think they should've pushed her into giving her money to the world vision even no they really need it , it was her money and she might have really needed it they should've let her decide

  10. She should not have been pressured to do anything with the money, I would have kept the money, I also think she should take legal advice as the charity Act has rules in place for this kind of thing, I think they the radio station have acted very poorly.

  11. they should have given it from their own pay packets- poor person, $7000 don't come easy- and i can't imagine they'd feel great about giving it away

  12. In no situation should anyone tell someone what to do with money won. Who knows what her situation is. I personally will not give to any of these big organisation as I have learnt so much does not get to the people, more to the people in the high executive positions. These poor people do not need to be like this, it suits their Government to have their people starve and receive all this money. Most of these people survive in corrupt countries where the Government live in pure luxury and just let it happen. If I was 100% sure the money was not used corruptly I would give. But it was so wrong to emotionally black mail this women into gining it away, if it truly happened. I would have kept it.

  13. No. That is stupid.

If you need the money then why would you give it up? You give to charity when you have more then you need. Not when you need some!

  14. Charity begins at home.  What if she were homeless, or had a dying family member?  I think being co-erced into giving it up isnt really a charitable gift is it?  Its guilt!  Shame on Jackie O n Kyle for doing that, have never thought highly of them before this but *shakes head* that just sucks, I wonder if they sponser a world vision child?

  15. That's a bit rough. They're using guilt and peer pressure to make her give up the money that she won fair and square and had probably got all excited about already. What if she needed it to pay off a big debt or had a sick family member? What if she didn't want to donate to World Vision at all but would have preferred to donate it to another good cause like Cancer Research or an Aids charity? It's also going to cost her more as in 8 years, she'll probably be guilted into continuing her sponsorship or sponsoring another child. Really not much of a win at all, except for World Vision of course...
