For anyone who has heard of O'Charley's Restaurant, the person cooking the meal, would they be considered a "Chef"? Say they worked at Burger King or Denny's would the person cooking be considered a "Chef"? I used to work with a girl who said her husband is a 'Chef" for one of these restaurants. I used to work at a restaurant similar as a salad bar attendant/ greeter and I know then they were considered Cooks. I thought a chef usually works at a fancier restaurant. She used to try and put everyone else down. Anyway, I was just curious if Cook or Chef.

  1. You only be considered a chef if you have culinary qualifications and/or if you have worked for a number of years in a 'proper' restaurant cooking  the food from scratch.

  2. i'm not really sure but i think to be considered as a chef you'd have to have this kind of degree and your really studied. but if not i guess your just a cook. for example, rachel ray's not a chef ut she does have a cook show and she cooks pretty well. so that makes her a good cook. if you cook in a good restaurant but don't have the degree thing our a pretty good cook. but if you have the degree then congrats! you are a chef!

  3. Charlie Browns is a nice restaurant.  He or she would be a chef.  Denny's or Burger King........Fried cook.

  4. Technically, chefs go to culinary school. A line cook at Denny's or BK is just that--a cook.

  5. Think more in terms of a 'chef' as being someone who pulls a whole menu together, can alter a menu, and can alter the contents of a dish so as to make up a new one.  A chef would do this because of his background, which could include a culinary school, but not because he or she worked here or there, fancy or not.

A chef is also someone who is like a manager who can hand work off to his supervisors and even to dish washers (bottom of the line).

    Got it?

    HTH.

  6. lol no thats a cook

  7. I think that a chef is for sophisticated resturants like tuxedo and bowtie type resturant and everyone else is just flippin burgers

  8. No they are cooks because the proper training is neeed before they can be called chefs. Also all chefs have their own knives for preparing meals but cooks don't.

  9. Nope you would be considered a cook

  10. A chef is the head of the kitchen.  He usually develops the meals, including the recipe.  He will be involved in cooking some of the meals but most of the time he passes the meal orders onto those staffing the different stations in the kitchen.  If you want a quick way to find out the roles, the Disney movie Ratitoue (sp) has a run thru on the different stations that is easy to understand.
