what kinds of things does the project management department/team do in a company?

What kind of business?

It's obvious project management is in charge of "projects" but that doesn't help you.

A few examples

- a marketing/publicity firm: project managemnet would be involved in publicity campaigns for clients

- bank/ICT-department: they will be in charge of implementing a new technology

- architect/construction: the design/construction of a building

In general most companies have some projects to "manage", but not that many companies do have a project management department
