If your Magic Jack is lost or stolen, what happens to your phone number?

I like the comment about traveling with Magic Jack, but, is your phone number protected if it's lost or stolen?

My son is in the military and this would be a big money saver while he is in Europe, but not worth the headache if the phone number is attached to the gizmo....
