I've been invited to join a local paranormal investigation team.

Really looking forward to it.--esp. since I've FOUND someone as interested as I am who really wants to join as well.

Anyway, just curious to know #1, how many ppl are either making up stories to gain attention or merely 'think' there is something paranormal going on?

#2, when your out on an investigation, how many visits does it take b4 you and your group/team find something[s] that are truely unexplainable?

Even if you find nothing, I bet their stories are pretty interesting

but are there some whacky ppl too, who are disturbed upstairs and are just 'seeing things'?

hmmmm, .... lol

  1. I'm no investigator but I bet most people have a strange occurance with a logical explanation that they have yet to see.  these people aren't lying but just can't possibly think of a reason as to why something is happening. I would say this is the case with most noises and opening or closing doors. A small minority of people will want to have a ghost and an even smaller minority will have something truly unexplainable.

  2. Both claimants and investigators are participating in a lie, but the claimants are doing so unintentionally (due to being delusional or very easily excited), while the investigators are propagating misinformation and pseudoscience in order to make money.

  3. Most people are being honest. However, it is helpful to be aware of Urban Legends (link below) so you know when you are listening to one and also to ask hard questions like "who was the doctor that pronounced you dead and you will contact him with us for confirmation?"

These two simple approaches quickly eliminate the "I want your attention" crowd.

Do they think something paranormal is going on (but being honest) is another question. I have investigated cases where people were happy to have normal explanations for their experiences and where they refused to even consider that there could be a normal explanation despite any evidence offered for a normal explanation that was a better fit to the experience than a paranormal reason.

I have visited some sites on numerous occasions and continued to find no activity. Some I immediately found normal explanations for like the rail road tracks in San Antonio. Unfortunately many public places and certainly private individuals will not allow you unlimited access for an indefinite period of time.

I believe back in the early 1900's some psychical researchers actually rented a house to stay in and study. There were numerous charges of fraud but still one would have to rent the property for complete access and numerous investigations.

In cases I have investigated (off and on for 15 years) I have come across one single case where the cause was hallucination due to medication and it's inappropriate use.

Most of the cases (that will actually let you investigate) will not involved anyone that would qualify for a mental disorder.

Certainly there are some people with unusual "whacky" beliefs and ideas but that does not qualify as being "disturbed" if by that you mean suffering from a mental or medical disorder.

  4. I've been babysitting in a historical house where the family says they've seen  things..before remodeling. I haven't seen anything. I believe them BECAUSE ...they don't want anything to be there and don't even want to imagine it. Of course others will say it's only their fear..but they're not afraid. I'm sure they're careful who they tell about these occurrences.  It's an 1886  3 story house..but the rooms aren't large like some houses of that era.

  5. With experience you can soon spot people who are just attention seekers. Yes, you also meet people with mental issues and hoaxsters. These are very few and very far between and if you're doing an investigation without an attachment to the outcome,  both are easy to determine.

To answer your question directly - no. I find that the majority of people who seek out Paranormal Investigators are honestly experiencing things that they cannot find an explanation for, and they have no one else to ask. They fear being made fun of or labeled as "crazy"

The number of visits vary depending on the situation. Sometimes we pick up EVPs or record anomalies immediately, or we find a 'normal' explanation for events. Much depends on how the investigation is conducted and how much history can be learned before the investigation begins. As others have said, most people do not wish to give you unlimited access.

Check out the group carefully. I've never found anything "paranormal" that can cause you physical harm but your own mind is the most powerful force you will ever encounter. Fear can kill!

Check out my group's website and explore other groups. Do your own research on how other groups operate and on how the group you wish to join operates.

Most groups do NOT charge and are not trying to rip anybody off. We're simply seeking answers and trying to help people who have no where else to turn for help.

  6. I would advise you to go into it with an open mind.

More than likely, something will happen before your brain even has time to process it. Then you're like, "what the h**l was that?"

Personally, I like to visit a place at least 6 times before I make a determination.

Some nights can be quiet and uneventful. And other nights people are scrambling to witness others making contact.

In a lot of ways, it's like going fishing........some times you get lots of bites, and other times you walk away with a sunburn and bug bites.

But go to have fun. And you may even want to stay behind the scenes and watch others.

Everyone is a little different with their approaches.

I would prefer speaking to them like I would another person.

Others like to get them angry to get a response.
