If your air conditioner is not producing cold air, does that mean you need to get your freon replaced?

It's been really hot lately and my air conditioner works but the air isn't cold enough to lower the temperature in my house so I'm wondering if I need to replace something. We haven't changed anything in our airconditioning for 12 years so I'm wondering if its about that time..

  1. Either the freon or have the compressor checked also.

  2. Yes if it has leak in it make sure you get fixed

  3. If you are not getting cold air and the filter is clean then you need to have the system checked by a professional.  If there is a leak and there is no refrigerant left in the system it can be very costly to have it repaired.  If the unit is more than 10 yrs, old you should just replace it.

  4. You could have several problems.  First, you have to ensure that the air conditioner you are using is big enough for the room you are trying to keep cool.  It could be over working itself.

Once you have determined that the unit is of sufficient size, you need to check the filters.  These filters get dirty.  That is what they are designed to do.  If you didn't have these filters all that dirt would get sucked into your unit.  And that isn't good.  Removed the filter.  It is usually in the front where the facing clips off.  Wash the filter out with warm soapy water and let dry or you can purchase a new filter.  I have always just cleaned the old one.

If that doesn't help, your problem is more serious.  More than likely you have a small leak and you are low on freon.  It doesn't take much.  You can try recharging it with store bought kit but you will still have the leak.  If you call a repairman I am afraid it is going to cost you more than it would to just purchase a new unit.  Especially if the repairman tells you the compressor is shot.

Hopefully, cleaning the filters works for you.  Good Luck!

  5. Have you tried cleaning the filter? A 12 year old air conditioner isn't worth calling a repairmen, it will cost you 50% of what a new one is. The filter is the only thing you can check. Start looking for a new one on sale with the same btu's or more than your present one has.
