Question:

If your bumber is damaged, it is a good idea to have the body shop paint over it?

I have a 2000 Toyota Echo and I'm going to re-sell it. Someone hit the bumber, fender and broke the light. I was able to pull it out but it has to be realigned and there are a few scratches. Because it's made of plastic, I'm wondering how a paint job would do on that material. Will it crack, peal or flake? Or should I just have the bumber replaced?

  1. Fix the old bumper. It is a minor job to the paint shop and they know how to make it look good.  Get the estimate first.

Remove, install and paint the new bumper will cost u a lot more.

  2. Depending on how deep the scratches are, you may be able to get away with repairing the bumper you have.  If it is too far gone, you will have to get a replacement.  The replacement will have to be painted as well.  So weather you use the old one, or get a new one, they will both be painted the same way.  BTW, if you had to choose between a damaged car, and a non-damaged car, which would you choose?  It will be easier to sell if it looks good.

  3. yes

  4. Plastic bumpers can be painted however the process is slightly different. Since plastic is flexible and paint is not, additives must be added to the paint to make it flexible. The bumper must also be repaired differently and prepared differently before painting. If you skimp on the prep work then the paint will come back off. Any good bodyshop will know how to do it properly.
