If your child had a large birth mark would you get it removed?

My niece has a large red birth mark on her thigh and it gets bigger when she is hot. When she was 3 months the doctor suggested they laser it off , he said she will hate it when she is older so they should remove it for looks.

my sister was rather mad that they suggested unnecessary cosmetic surgery for a little baby and told them when she is a adult she can make that choice.

What would you do. would you get it removed or do you think its silly to have a baby get cosmetic surgery.

  1. My baby has a little red patch on her eye and as she grows it shirks so it might do the same for her. But I rather you do it now rather than have her go through all the pain when she becomes older. Talk to her doctor.

  2. it really depends.

when shes an adult she might have already been teased by it.dont they numb so it doesnt hurt during lazer?

it might grow back it might not all depends.

  3. if it looks bad and it's bothering the kid..

  4. I'd go with letting her decide. Since she's still very young, there's a possibility it might fade on it's own, so surgery wouldn't be necessary.

  5. no i wouldnt

  6. I have a very large birthmark on my leg (from hip to toes) and now that I'm an adult I could care less about it. As long as it's not causing her physical pain, I would say leave it up to her to decide. The laser treatments can be painful and she may not want to go through that.

  7. My friend has a daughter with a large brown birthmark on her chest between her b*****s.  She opted to wait until she was older and let her make the decision. Her daughter is now 15 and has opted to have it lasered.  the doctor says he cannot guarentee that the removal will not cause scars.  I personally would probably wait.

On another note,  My baby girl (2 mos old) was born with several skin tags on her ear lobes.  I will be having them removed when she turns 6 months. We decided to do this now because they are on her face and cannot be covered.

Its really just a personal decision.  Either way is fine.

  8. i would get it removed it could become cancerous.

  9. I use to have a friend that had a V on his forhead.

it turned red when he was hot and when he got mad.

its still there to this day.

    but no one cares.

    i think its cute.

    lol

either way Id just let it alone.

  10. is it raised from the skin? or is it flat? if its raised....i think its called a strawberry and it will go away. if its flat, then i dont know. but i wouldnt have it removed. its on her thigh...not a big deal. and if she doesnt like it then she can have it lasered off when she wants to.

  11. Your sister is right. Having a baby undergo cosmetic surgery for a dumb birthmark on her thigh is ridiculous.

Deal with it when she's older. Some birthmarks go away, too.

  12. It could  be a hemangioma.. in that case, they usually take the wait and see approach unless it is on the face and would cause a deformation.. a hemangioma can grow for up to 18 months-so that may be the reason that the doctor is opting for a removal.. usually they don't do it unless it is completely necessary!!

  13. No, I wouldn't until my child said they wanted it off.

  14. i would leave it be! it's on her leg, not her face. you say it's flat so it's not a large hemangioma

thus it's not causing her any harm right now. doctors have a bad habit of always wanting to make things "perfect". i can't tell you how many times i argued w/docs about certain things or even dentists about pulling baby teeth cause they were "scared" the ones after it would grow in crooked.

they can't know the out come when the kid is still little. some birth marks decrease in size as the child ages. of course if it got larger over time i would seek out a specialist, but until then I'd leave it be! then when the child was old enough to express their feelings and wishes about the birth mark they could handle it then.

surgery is very stressful for a young baby, I'd not do that when it's completely unnecessary.

  15. my son has a large strawberry birth mark on the back of his thigh. i would never ever have it removed i love it!! and i dont blame your sister for being mad at the doctor. my doctor would NEVER suggest such a thing.

  16. I have one of those birthmarks on my knee. I tried to have it lasered off at 15, twice, and it grew back. I would leave it alone and let the child decide when she is at least 12.
