Question:

If your child has been going bottomless at home while potty training, what do you do when you leave the house?

My son will be 3 in a couple months and we have just started the potty training process. A few friends had found success in having their kids go bottomless at home while having their little potty nearby, so that's what we decided to try. So far, my son has done very well with this. He runs to his potty whenever he needs to go (even p**p!) and I don't even have to ask him. We make a huge deal out of it and as long as we're at home and he has no pants on, he continues to do great. My dilemma is what to do when we leave the house as I obviously can't leave him naked. I have tried putting big boy underpants on him and taking him to the bathroom frequently while we are out but he only wants to sit on the toilet for about 2 seconds then puts up a fuss to get off. It's usually a struggle to get him on in the first place. I'm at loss of what to do. Has anyone else run into this problem??

  1. If he is bottomless, the training should go quickly and this dilemma will pass quickly (I mean, he will tell you when he needs to go in the store because he knows not to have an accident and otherwise you don't have to worry), but personally, I love to use the vinyl covers sold in the baby department over underwear when we go out and about for peace of mind.

    EDIT:

my son put up a big fuss in the stores the last few days before he became really independent.  I finally realized he was fighting because he was ready to be independent and he didn't want me suggesting when he try anymore.  He had some accidents when I stopped, but not too many, he was ready.

  2. I have just began to start potty training my son he is 2 and 4 months and we were doing the bare bottom thing as well at first .. Now he wears underwear all day and he is pretty good with letting me know he needs to go. When we go out I always make sure he doesn't need to go potty before we leave but I put a pull up on him and tell him he needs to tell me if he needs to go. The other day we were in the car and he told me he had to go potty we were on our way home so I asked him to hold it until we got home and he did as soon as we walked in the door he was on that toilet going pee.  Does he pee sitting down? If your with dad have him take him to the restroom when you are out and have dad show him that he pees standing up and maybe he'll want to be a big boy like daddy. Goodluck, he'll get use to it soon

  3. Try slowly adding back in clothing while still at home. This way, he'll get used to having to deal with clothes while he's still in an environment he's used to.

    I hope this helps! :)

  4. I use pull ups when we go out.

Recently, also, my family had a stomach bug. It was nice for my son to use the pull ups without having terrible accidents in the bed.

  5. That is great your son is doing so well with control.  It sounds like he has mastered control of his bladder but is very afraid of any toilet.  My kids did not want to use a potty because my daughter said it was for babies and she wanted to use what Mommy and Daddy use.  I researched and found a very sturdy stool with sides for the toilet so my kids could feel completely comfortable on the toilet.  http://www.amazon.com/Elite-Child-Corpor...

The wide single step is great and my kids were very relaxed the whole time.  Feeling stable and safe made all the difference.  This stool was well worth it and it was a lifesaver in making the kids independent.  Hope this helps.
