If you have a summer baby, would you send him/her to school early or late? Meaning, if it was born in July, would you send him/her to kindergarten when they just turned five, or when they just turned six?

  1. My twins were born on April 24th (yes, it's not summer but again) and they will go when they turn 5. Especially considering that school provides lessons at an age when you can understand the lessons for 2-3 years older students.

  2. The cutoff date to turn 5 in order to start kindergarten is September 1st where I live. My son was born on September 20th, so he will start school when he is almost 6.

  3. our state has a law-if they are 5 by september 6th, they start kindergarten.

if there was no law- i would still send him at 5 years old if i could. that gives them a  great head start on the school year, meaning a good head start on education period.

if you are contemplating because you think he is too young-see if there is 1/2 day kindergarten in your area. my area has about 2 schools per city that offers it.

i myself did full day. they provide snacks and naps, anything they would get at home, with a good schedule to help them get on track. good luck!! ( btw-my kids were august)

  4. Most school districts don't give you the option.  There are calendar guidelines that they must follow.  Exceptions can be made, but they are rare.

My daughter turned 6 two weeks after kindergarten started last year.  I originally thought it would be a good thing to try to get her in when she was 4 (turning 5 right after school started), but now am glad that I waited.  She is confident in her classroom, more mature physically, emotionally & intellectually.  Much more so than she would have been if we had rushed it a bit.

And, this way, unless they skip her ahead at some point, we'll have her around for one last year before she graduates & moves on :D

  5. Our school district's cutoff is 9/1.  My son was born on 8/26 and my daughter was born 2 years later on 9/13.  Which meant my son just made the cutoff and my daughter just missed it.  My son would complain that he was the youngest in his class, my daughter would complain that she was the oldest in her class.  They were two years apart in age, but three years apart in school.  It didn't really make a difference either way.

Most kids go to preschool these days.  If your child's preschool teacher feels they are ready at 5, then I would send him/her.  They are the ones you need to ask this question.

If your child did not go to preschool, then go with your gut.  Do you think your child is ready?  If you are still not sure what to do, talk to the principal of your elementary school and ask what is expected of an incoming kindergartener.  Does your child meet the expectations?

  6. Sent my son early.  It was a good decision but it really depends on your child's development.

  7. I'll decide that later on.

My twins were born in the beginning of June and we have some time to wait before that choice is made.

  8. My son was born July 9th and my daughter was born June 26th and I plan on sending them to kindergarten when they are 5..I think that this is a personal choice for a parent to make for each individual child. It depends on the child...both of my kids are pretty advanced for their ages..my daughter just turned 2 and she knows how to count to 10 already...so idk...I personally see no reason to hold mine back...

  9. Both my kids were July babies are were 5 when school started.

  10. I am going through this right now. My daughters birthday is 9/12 the cut off is 9/1 for pre-k. She's only 23 months right now but I've looked into everything and every way around it. Most parents that are in the same situation that have boys are ok with it. But not the ones with girls. I am relocating back to NYC because I don't want my daughter to start a year late for 11 days. The cut off up north is 12/31 If it was 6 months maybe but days. That's not right.

  11. If your child is ready, I would send them at age 5. That way they won't feel like a doofus graduating at age 19. :)

  12. My child was born July 6th and she went to school at age 5.

  13. my birthday is july 11th and i went to kindergarten at 5
