I'm out of work right now and having a tough time financially . And I have a brother who is wealthy. Even though he and his wife and kids go to Church. They are a bit on the liberal side. I really don't want to ask him for help and in the past when I have he acted kinda funny.... I'm one of these pick yourself up by the boot straps type.. One who is use to doing for himself without asking for help.. . What do you think ?

Thanks for your replies..

  1. Not being offensive or anything, but your bro sounds like an ***-wipe if he grudges his own brother some cash when he needs it.

    Though, don't get me wrong, if someone is simply being parasitic - that's different.

  2. That kind of pride could be a symptom of sinful pride, it's really up to your own examination of your conscience to know for sure.  Pride is sinful when we think more highly of ourselves or our image that we think of others or even God.  Thinking that we know better for ourselves than God does.  Or putting ourselves in front of God and others.  And being afraid to "lose face", for example.

    Pray to God to ask Him to help your cultivate the opposite virtue to the sin of pride....humility.  Humility mean quickly forgiving little insults to your personal pride or your ego, and serving others.

    We all struggle with this....pride is, I think, where all other sins stem from.  I'll be praying for you.  Pray for me, too, I also have a pride problem!

  3. Good question...

    I think it could be pride if you feel the Lord is telling you to ask your brother for help but you are refusing to do so because of pride.

    On the other hand... maybe you do need to work for your food, and trust the Lord for whatever He will provide.  Maybe you aren't supposed to ask for help, but if it is offered. receive it.

    These things are difficult to answer, because nobody knows your heart or what the Lord is telling you.

  4. Nothing wrong with being self sufficient, however when you need the help, ask for it...

    As my Grannie used to say..Pride don't put supper on the table..

  5. Look what Satan tried to do,

    Isaiah 14:14

    14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;

           I will make myself like the Most High."

    he tried to set his throne up above GOD's the pride driving him to the extreme thinking no one can touch me not even the creator of all was his downfall... Ultimately c**p rolls down hill, and here we are today living in seperation from GOD and the Devil has won a big battle so far convincing many people who care less about learning the bible before bringing judgement on them selves... teh greatest thign the devil has ever done was convince the world he doesnt exsist.. GOD humbles those who deserve it, you not wanting help isnt pride but maybe stubborn??? but then again i can understand refusing help especially when later on down the road they pull the remember when i gave you this??? now help me!!!! i dont buy that c**p, if your spiritually hungry stop on by if not goodluck.

  6. Philippians 2 - 1 If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

    5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death - even death on a cross!
