  1. first take the lcm of 6 and 14=42

    5/6*42=5/1*7=35

    9/14*42=9/1*3=27

    5/6+9/14=35+27     =62    =31

                   _____       ___    ____

                      42         42       21

  2. The rule is to get both into a form that can be added... in this case, you have to find a number that both 6 and 14 will divide evenly into.

The easiest way to get it is to multiply 6 * 14 or 84.  Then it becomes a little harder to explain but write it out exactly as I say it and it will become clearer.

5/6 = divide 6 into the 84 and you get 14, right?  Then take the 14 and multiply it by the 5.  So 5 * 14 = 70 and the first term becomes 70/84.

Now do the same thing to the 9/14.  Divide 14 into the 84 and you get 6 this time.  Multiply the 6 times the 9 and you get 54, so the second term becomes 54/84.

Now you have an equation that can be added together:

70/84 + 54/84 = 124/84 and reduce it by dividing 84 into 124 and you get 1- 40/84.  Reduce the fraction as far as you can and you end up with

    1- 10/21

Hope this helps.  Below is a link to a great explanation.  This is a very good site to help you with math.
