I thought that there might be another (lower level) math class I could take.

  1. Most colleges require some math classes as "general education" regardless of your major.  Check with your school advisor and find out what the lowest-level is you can take.  My guess is algebra's going to be as low as you can go and still get credit for the general-ed requirements.

  2. most colleges & universities require math as part of a general education requirement for graduation. they may not require algebra, per se, so check with your counselor.

  3. College Algebra IS the lowest level math class. All other math courses build on the fundamentals of college algebra. It is not nearly as difficult as it seems. Remember that it takes a little practice - but isn't nearly as difficult as memorizing 50 foreign words and their meanings per week.

  4. Most colleges are set up so that you have to take several General Requirement courses in order to get a complete degree. At my university, you needed a critical thinking class which could either be a math class or an upper level philosophy class. Look into which class could substitute for what requirement.

I guess the answer to your question would be, yes, most students have to take a math class regardless of their major. But sometimes there are ways around it.

    Good luck.
