If your stimulus is intercepted how will you know?

A letter was mailed to my husband in April of this year stating that his taxes (fed and state) could be intercepted due to back child support... Long story short.. when our daughter was born four + years ago I went on medical assistance as I was still covered under my own insurance but thought the birth of her wouldn't be so I went on MA... well anyways I have to submit paperwork EVERY time they send this letter to prove that MA did not cover it and that my own insurance did... (wish I would have just taken my chances back then) and even after submitting my insurance papers saying it was all covered and paper work from MA stating they did not pay for it to child support it still seems to haunt... I am now wondering since again we received this letter if I have to worry about an intercept again... Luckily I've been able to fix/solve it all prior to our refunds however this time I am trying to get it resolved for good and haven't completely cleared it for the hundreth time yet...

  1. The IRS will send you a letter if your stimulus is intercepted. According to the IRS:

    Q. I'm eligible for a payment but I still owe federal income tax from a prior year. Will my payment be reduced?

    A. Yes. For this purpose, the stimulus payment is treated like any other tax refund. This means that part or all of your payment can be used to pay past-due federal or state income taxes or non-tax federal debt such as student loans and child support. If this occurs, you will receive a letter explaining how the stimulus payment was applied.

  2. I can't follow you story.  Does your husband owe anyone child support or not?

Edit:  The letter should say if it is or not.  If your husband owes child support, than you need to assume it will be intercepted as it should be.

  3. MA, is easy to get but when you want to resolve to problem by clearing it up it is hard to do. So what I would do is keep trying and writing and calling them. keep all your paper work that you have and go to the child support office. Than you sould get a check.

  4. So you have sent the paperwork to just the IRS that your insurance did cover it? If so you need to talk with the child support services and send THEM the paperwork aswell so that they know it wasn't part of child support and your

insurance covered, that will be updated and IRS will get the new info.

In regards to your question will it say it's being intercepted usually they will just take it and then send you a letter telling you they did. If your want to find out before call that number below or there should be one in your letter that can also be used.

  5. call 800 829 1040, make sure you pick the option for a tax law question.  they will be able to tell you if your refund will be offset.  If so they will give you a phone number to find out who is offseting it.  If there is an offset IRS must send the refund to the agency who submitted the offset, you must get it back from that agency

  6. If the  IRS is going to take your stimulus, they'll send you a letter after they take it. They will tell you how much it was, and the reason they took it. And that money will be subtracted from what you owe them.
