I usually layer my child's clothing. Something like a light flannel or denim shirt with a windbreaker. Or a light fleece sweatjacket. They can always take it off.

The best thing is to put them in what layers you yourself would wear. You don't want to overdress them in a heavy sweater, but in layers, they can just peel them off as it gets warmer.

in 40 degree clothes.  better too hot than too cold.  he can always take it off but he can never put on what he doesn't have.
