i have a 98 mistubishi eclipse

and after my fiance changed the spark plugs my car had a clicking noise

so i checked the oil

and it had none in it

so i filled it up

well the clicking noise quited down a bit

so i thought it would be ok to drive today

i got bout half a mile down the road and it started acting up agian

my boyfriend is convieved that the rods are bent or the motors locked

but even though it turned off

and the radio and everything was still working so i know its not the battery or alternator

it finally turned over agian and then turned back off like 30 secounds later after i moved the car.

i think its the starter relay

can someone help me please i really need to know whats wrong with this car and if the spark plugs being changed had anything to do with it!!

thanks!

  1. I think you mean push rods. if the engine is locked it would not run at all. Check the length of your spark plugs and compare to the old ones, like the other answer said. you can get them too long and will hit the top of the piston.

  2. if the motor is locked, it wont turn over, but the tie rods has nothing to do with the starting. you say it happened soon as he put the new plugs in?, you might have the wrong plugs, they could be too long and hitting on the pistons.

  3. like the above answers, make sureyou got  the right plugs nd that they are tightend down t spec.  i had a plugonce actualy come undone and was being slapped around by te piston.  it was an interesting experience driving down the hwy and losing the number 3 piston.

  4. The tie rods are not something that would keep it from running. They are a part of the suspension/steering system, not the engine. It sounds like this car is seriously due for some maintenance. When you "filled it up" with oil...how much did you put in? If the engine is "locked up" it would not even crank over.

  5. the wrong spark plug CAN reach too far into the cylinder and hit the pistons causing a knock, chances are he is talking about connecting rods in the motor.Tell Jimbobo to keep his effing hands off your car and have it towed to a reputible repair shop

  6. It is connecting rod of engine you want to mention and not tie rod.  Bended connecting rod makes engine stuck and cannot crank the engine anymore. If you hear something clicking while engine is running after replacing spark plug I think there is voltages leaking from spark plug cable and need to replace also. Loose fit of cable from distributor cap to spark plug may consider also cause voltage clicking. Consult you nearest repairman for sure expert advise.
