  1. Yes, "and" and "but" can be interchanged within the same sentence. I've been corrected about that more times than I can tell. "But 'and' means this and 'but' means that I argue...", to no avail. My proofreaders always tell me, "exchange the two and you will see that they mean the same thing." So why do we have two separate words then? Go figure.
