Ifs ands and buts do you know many from the top of your head?

Yes, "and" and "but" can be interchanged within the same sentence. I've been corrected about that more times than I can tell. "But 'and' means this and 'but' means that I argue...", to no avail. My proofreaders always tell me, "exchange the two and you will see that they mean the same thing." So why do we have two separate words then? Go figure.
