Ignacio Mieres joins Exeter Chiefs
Exeter has bolstered the club's playing squad with the signing of Argentine fly half Ignacio Mieres.
The 23-year-old creative maestro has spent the last two years of his career playing in France and feels now is the right time to move and have a go at English domestic rugby.
"His all-round game is pretty good.
I think he played about 10 games last season for Stade Francais, so he's got a bit of pedigree, and he has been capped by Argentina as well," said head coach Rob Baxter.
Mieres has many different qualities that should ensure he has a very successful career at Exeter. However, he will have to fight with other players in the squad for a place.
Different qualities
Mieres' biggest asset is his versatility. His best position is at fly half but he can move around different sections of the team. This will be important over the season
if Exeter picks up a large number of injuries and suspensions.
He arrives at Exeter with a relatively low level of experience but plenty of ambition. Exeter can provide the perfect stage for this player to add to his seven Argentina
caps. He will have a lot to prove after not being able to hold down a regular place in either the Stade Francais or Perpignan teams.
Exeter is a club spoilt for choice in the fly half department. Ryan Davis and Josh Matavesi all play this role as their best position and all are ahead of Mieres in the
pecking order. The Argentine will have to do exceptionally to force his way into the team quickly.
"He brings a bit of experience in a position where we felt about two
months ago we were a bit thin. As it happens, with Steeno [Gareth Steenson] taking a knock on Saturday, his timing is pretty good," added Baxter.
Betting advice
Mieres should inject some high level quality into the Exeter team. This will make the side more creative and attacking, which means there is a greater chance of scoring
points and a better chance of winning more games.
