Igor Kunitsyn beats Igor Sijsling 6-3, 6-4, 6-2
World number 66 Igor Kunitsyn of Russia cruised past world number 188 Igor Sijsling of the Netherlands in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 in the opening round of Wimbledon Championships at the All England Club in London on Monday.
The match lasted for an hour and 38 minutes.
The Russian needed a single break of serve in the first set to win it 6-3. Kunitsyn hit 62 percent of the first serves and a couple of aces in the first set. The 29-year-old hit eleven winners and won 81 percent of the first service
points in the opening set.
Kunitsyn broke Sijsling in the fifth game of the second set and capitalised on it to grab it 6-4. The Russian fired two aces and eleven winners in the second set. The 29-year-old claimed 32 percent of the receiving points in the
second set. Kunitsyn converted one of the three break points he received and did not face any break point in the second set.
The Russian carried the winning momentum into the third set and broke Sijsling a couple of times, winning the set 6-2. Kunitsyn hit 59 percent of the first deliveries, capturing a whopping 88 percent of the points on them in the
third set.
The right-handed will meet seventeenth seed Richard Gasquet of France in the second round.
Denis Istomin defeats Philipp Kohlschreiber 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3
Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin, ranked 65th in the world, came back from one set down to upset world number 39 Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany in four sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round. The Uzbek took two hours
and 25 minutes to overcome his opponent in a tough contest.
Kohlschreiber broke Istomin once in the first set to win it 6-4. The German hit four aces and grabbed 81 percent of the first service points in the opening set. The 27-year-old capitalised on the only break point opportunity he
created on the Uzbek’s serve in the first set.
Istomin made a comeback in the second set as he broke the German in the sixth game and consolidated on it to claim the set 6-3. The Uzbek won all the sixteen first service points in the second set.
The 24-year-old took an early lead in the third set as he broke his opponent in the first game and held his next service game to go ahead 2-0. Serving to stay in the set at 3-5, Kohlschreiber failed to hold his serve, losing the
set 3-6.
After taking two sets to one lead, Istomin kept his the German under pressure throughout the fourth set. The Uzbek served out the set at 5-3.
Istomin will play tenth seed Mardy Fish of USA in the round of 64.
