Igor Kunitsyn trounced Alexander Rumyantsev straight set defeat in round one – Geneva Open 2012 CH
Ranked 156th in the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings, Igor Kunitsyn, gave his compatriot, Alexander Rumyantsev, a remarkable straight-sets defeat at the Geneva Challenger 2012 on Wednesday.
He penned down his triumph 6-2, 6-2, at the indoor hard courts of GreenSet GrandPrix, Switzerland.
None of the players held their serves in the opener set but the Rumyantsev managed to secure the initial point by securing a 1-0 lead. However, Kunitsyn nudged up and avenged his loss by cashing his challenger’s serve in the second
game, marking a 1-all score line. For the initial part of the set, the score line crossed down to 2-all in the fourth game but he couldn’t rally any further. Kunitsyn held his self-assurance and reeled off all the remaining games without facing any real challenge.
He pulled out the opener with a 6-2 lead.
In the second set, the 31-year-old Russian senior commenced a superb start by sustaining his former momentum. He secured the initial two games and marked a 2-0 lead after cashing his challengers serve in the second game. Despite
of his losing edge, Rumyantsev responded by dissolving his challenger’s serve in the third game but it proved insignificant. The Russian veteran preserved his intensity and plucked the entire games with the fervour to prevail. He availed another break opportunity
in the last game, stealing the set by a 6-2 win.
The 5ft 11in tall, Kunitsyn, dominated throughout the second set with 63 percent initial serve accuracy. He secured nine of 15 first and six of nine second delivery points. He secured the lead by capitalizing on three of six serve
break opportunity and his competitor managed to attain the single one presented to him. The right-hander Russian had 58 percent initial serve with eight of 15 first and two of 11 second serve points.
For the second round, Kunitsyn will contest against Marius Copil. He is believed to be in an excellent run of form as he gave the second seeded, Lukas Rosol, a shocking three set defeat 4-6, 7-6(3), 7-6(1).
