Igor Sijsling outclasses Grigor Dimitrov in opening round – Moselle Open 2011
An upset result at the opening round of the Moselle Open, as the world number 64, Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria, crashed out of the tournament at the hands of the 148th ranked Dutch opponent, Igor Sijsling, on Tuesday
night.
The one sided affair lasted for less than an hour, with Sijsling completing a comprehensive victory in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, to make it to the second round of the ATP (Association of tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 tournament.
The competition was staged on the indoor hard courts of Arenes de Metz, in Metz, France, with a surprising result for the local crowd. Dimitrov hung in the matchup for just fifty four minutes before surrendering to the belligerence
of the Dutch qualifier in the second set to let him through to the next round.
It was the first victory for Sijsling in the current ATP World Tour season, as he had suffered defeats in his previous two matches. The Dutch qualifier displayed his magnificent points winning proficiency to outplay the Bulgarian
in the most authoritative manner. Sijsling’s 57 per cent serve included 10 thudding aces in the match and he dropped merely two points on his serve en route to victory. He secured 22 out of 24 first serve points, while Dimitrov closely followed him with 20
out of his 35 points.
Sijsling’s four cracking serve breaks proved to be the only deciding factor in the matchup, as the Bulgarian utterly failed to register a single serve break in the entire matchup, squandering away his two vital chances in the opening
set. Dimitrov was strong on his baseline defence but frittered some crucial points in the game to let his opponent take the better of him.
The Dutch qualifier was off to a ballistic start in the opening set and nailed two quick serve breaks to rocket away to a 5-1 lead in just twenty minutes of play. Dimitrov failed to recover from the damage done by the early serve
breaks and submitted the set number one to Sijsling at 2-6.
Sijsling continued his belligerence in the following set as well, breaking the Bulgarian opponent in the very first game to lead 2-0. His fourth serve break of the day came in the seventh game and the Dutch served out of the contest
with ease, finishing at 6-2, to earn a place in the second round of the tournament.
Sijsling will take on the seventh seeded German, Philipp Kohlschreiber, or the French qualifier, Jonathan Dasnieres de Veigy, in the next round for a place in the quarter-finals.
