I have an iguana that is 2yrs old but he is not tame and...well actually i have no clue cause im scared of the green machine but when i feed him i put my hand to put the plate down and his front legs stand up and he puts is head up and extends dewlap but when i rub the top of his head he closes his eyes as if to fall asleep in the position he looked so mean in the first place...can i hold him? or what should i do to tame him at this age and yes i know the basics to iguanas and have visited some websites...is he tame or no?

  1. At two years old, the window is almost closed as far as taming goes.  You should try to interact with the iguana daily for 30 minutes to an hour.  When you hold him, give him treats so he will associate good things with being held.

The eye closing thing is very common with iguanas.  It does not always mean they are happy or pleased (sometimes they close their eyes for the same reason an ostrich sticks its head in the sand) but most of the time it means they trust you.

The stance you describe is the classic hatchet stance, which iguanas do in the wild to make themselves look bigger and mean.  It is likely that you are coming down with the plate of food from above, and iguanas HATE to be approached from above since birds are their natural predators.  Try approaching from the sides if you can.

    Good luck!

  3. nope , just hold him alot then he will eventually give u his aggressive act.

  4. he likes its  but be carefull

  5. just like with a dog or a cat, the "closed eyes" while being rubbed means he likes it! the dewlap thing and standing like that is an act of dominance, and its probably because you reached your arm into the cage where he didnt see you coming, so maybe he thought it was another iggy. Try reaching in slowly and rubbing his head as you set down the food. Are you saying that you dont know if he is tame or not? Try to gently take him out and see how he reacts. Dont be scared; be confident.

  6. yes but i dont think he likes u touchin his food
