Iinking verizon yahoo messenger and yahoo group profile?

I was wondering if there was a way i could like my yahoo group profile with my verizon yahoo messanger so members of the group i have joined can see if i am online and message me. When I went to join the group it made me create a new profile so now it shows i am always offline on the group. I had the verizon yahoo messenger acct first then joined a group and the site said i had to create a new account and now i am lost because i really want the others to beable to see when i am there.
