Ijaz Butt faces sanctions from ICC
The International Cricket Council discussed the issue of sacking the Pakistan Cricket Board chairman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ijaz-Butt-c64128, as an ICC director in their board meeting last week, it has been reported by
Cricinfo. All the heads of the respective cricket boards are automatic directors of the ICC.
According to the website, Butt had been asked to comply to many measures in order to take steps to change the way in which cricket was being handled in the country or face an axe.
It had earlier been rumoured that Butt may be asked to resign from the post of the Pakistan Cricket Board chairman and in the process from the ICC board. However, that had not materialised, which meant that
the ICC had to issue the stern warning. It was also reported that the possibility to sacking Butt from the ICC board had been raised by one of the other members of the ICC board. It stemmed from the fact that there was a potential conflict of interest in the
cases against the three alleged match-fixers from Pakistan - Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Amir – and Butt’s duties as the PCB chairman.
However, that is only one of the issues against the PCB chairman. Already, the ICC was dissatisfied with the manner in which the chairman had reacted to the spot-fixing allegations against the Pakistani cricketers
in the Oval ODI. Butt had accused the English cricketers of fixing matches and was then sent a notice by the English cricket board for that slur.
The board meeting resulted in the ICC setting a deadline of 30 days for the PCB to set up anti-corruption measures at their domestic level. The ICC’s task force has also now been instructed to carry out any
kind of reforms which will be necessary to restore back the confidence in Pakistani cricket.
If the PCB is unable to put up the anti-corruption measures then the ICC could take action against Butt and withhold http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755’s prize money from cricket tournaments. There were also suggestions that Pakistan
could be suspended from playing cricket as a last resort.
