Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) Chairman, Ijaz Butt, appears reluctant to give up his charge, and is reportedly looking forward to convince the President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari to get an extension.
The current term of the PCB Chairman is going to end on October, 8, 2011, and according to sources he is in contact with Pakistan’s president for the continuity of his job.
Yesterday, PCB’s head attended the meeting in Karachi, which was called by the President Zardari to raise funds for the flood victims in Sindh province.
Sources also affirmed that Zardari, who is also PCB’s chief patron, has been showing complete confidence over Butt’s ability to run the cricket board, and it is expected that Butt’s tenure will be extended.
"If anything it appears as if the President plans to give Butt an extension as chairman of the board when his term expires next month. One can safely say that the President appears to have full confidence in Butt's ability to manage
cricket affairs," a source, who was present in yesterday’s meeting, stated.
According to earlier reports, PCB’s chairman was not interested in continuing with the responsibility, following his business and family commitments.
"Butt himself has hinted he might not want to continue beyond October 8 several times during internal meetings as his business and family commitments have suffered in the last two years due to his role as PCB chairman," sources
had reported.
Meanwhile, the President of Pakistan’s Spokesperson, Farhatullah Babar, also claimed that they have not yet decided the future of Butt.
Earlier, Farhatullah asserted in a statement that Zardari is not in the position to take the decision to extend Butt’s tenure, and would take any step in this regard after October 8, 2011.
Remember, Butt’s tenure has been famous for controversies and rifts with team captains, a spot-fixing scandal, and unpleasant relationship with the International Cricket Council (http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625).
Recently he was also involved in confrontation with the country’s most popular cricket star, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shahid-Afridi-c2482, which compelled the hard-hitting batsman to announce a conditional retirement from International cricket.
However, the PCB’s chairman has been very keen to eliminate players’ power from the Men in Green throughout his tenure, and took some admirable steps in this regard.
