Ijaz Butt takes a U-turn to save the sinking ship of PCB
As expected Pakistan cricket board (PCB) chairman Mr. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ijaz-Butt-c64128 has taken his words back and apologized for his corruption allegations on the English cricket team.
From the very first day when Ijaz Butt questioned performances of English players in the third One-Day International (ODI) of NatWest series, everyone knew that it was nothing but the childish frustration of the old man who didn’t knew how to handle such
pressure.
The PCB chairman was trying to go on front foot but he forgot when one leg is behind, the balance shifts and you fall down. When he should have come out and supported the tainted trio and Pakistan’s image, he went underground in order to avoid media confrontations.
Instead of investigating the involvement of Pakistan’s cricketers in the spot-fixing scandal, he blew the whole thing by claiming that England players have received enormous amount of bribes to lose the match.
PCB chairman Ijaz Butt has admitted that he was taking his words back about involvement of English players with bookies. He stated that he unreservedly apologizes for his allegations and said he narrated what he was told by the bookmakers.
Ijaz Butt should have reacted maturely when he first got the information from the bookies and should have confirmed that whether the information provided to him was credible or not.
Ijaz Butt met with ECB Chairman Giles http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clarke-c51120 to resolve the matter and the ECB Chairman got what they needed when finally Ijaz Butt bend down on his knees to withdraw his remarks.
But it is very interesting to know that Mr. Butt said that his comments were miss-interpreted. Anyone who has heard PCB chairman’s recent remarks can easily figure out that he is lying in his confession.
His U-turn couldn’t have been a more lame than this, when he said in a statement he never had any evidence of English players involvement in match-fixing, and he didn’t thought that they can do anything wrong.
His allegations didn’t go down well both with English cricket board and its team. The English cricketers at one stage even opted of pulling out of the series but things were sorted out behind doors after an emergency meeting between the players, and English
and Wales cricket board (ECB).
Andrew Strauss the skipper of England team, demand for instant apology but Ijaz Butt was adamant that whatever he said was right, and he won’t take his words back. The ECB sent him a legal notice on which Mr. Butt quickly flew back to England to handle the
matter.
Pakistan’s high commissioner in London Wajid Shams ul http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Haroon-Lorgat-c61719 to solve the issue, but Ijaz Butt didn’t show up in that meeting as well.
However, the ECB and PCB have jointly declared that the matter is now closed and things are normal. But from the look of things it is evident that the lines have been drawn between the two boards, and it will take a long time before the differences among
the two nations are overcome and the damage is that has been done is healed.
