Ike Davis begins striking homers after missing out in most of the season - MLB Update
Back-to-back homers free Ike Davis of the jinx looming over his head since April 18, a time when he had struck his last homer. What is more important is the juncture during which he hit those home-runs.
Against the Philadelphia Phillies, the Mets trailed and were about to miss their chance of recording their first sweep since 2006. Davis came and in a flash turned the whole complexion of the game around.
With this, he helped the Mets reinforce the notion of being the type of side, which can pull off wins from the worst of situations.
Mets have been extremely lucky in this season. Not just their replacements are performing un-expectedly well, as few players to whom one will rule out in general have also been extremely impressive.
As soon as Andres Torres got injured, the manager brought Kirk Nieuwenhuis and the replacement proved just as good. After spending time on the disabled list, Torres came back and much to auspiciousness of the Mets, he started from just where he had left.
As part of a continuation of the same, now Davis has joined the Mets’ list of successful hitters of the season.
Manager Terry Collins talked about his talent after his terrific performance in the game. Collins believes that Davis is a sort of hitter who will never spare bad pitches. A pitcher who feels to get away with his poor throws is wrong, if he is facing Davis
as a batter.
“Tonight tells me he is starting to get centered,” Collins said. “That is what kind of hitter he is. When he’s swinging good the singles are there, but when you make mistakes that’s when he does his biggest damage.”
Davis admits his struggle at connecting hits earlier in the season and is happy that he has managed those now.
“I feel like the last four or five games I’ve hit the ball solid,” said Davis. “I haven’t gotten a lot of hits, but I feel there is a change happening that is for the good.”
Davis cannot afford to grow complacent on his rare bursts on the plate as his batting average is still lower than what he is capable of. Therefore, he will look to pick up consistency now.
