Ike Davis’ continuous failures on plate cost New York Mets as they lack firepower - MLB Update
Start of the season had Ike Davis in the plans of drawing a huge contribution, in particular home-runs during the middle part of the innings. Those fell way short as Davis took a nosedive and struggled to find the right swings throughout the season.
This has left the Mets with little options when it comes to getting firepower and home-runs.
For the same reason, the Mets are one of the lowest clubs in terms of scoring home-runs. The Mets’ manager Terry Collins has given Davis sufficient time to prove and exhibit his mettle, but more often than not he has failed. Occasional home-runs apart, he
has been below-par and has just betrayed his role during critical junctures of the game.
As his decline worsened, voices were raised by the fans for sending him down to the Minor League. Instead of letting him become a weak-link, a batter who enjoys relatively better form can be given chance in his place.
The manager Collins was firm and wanted to give every possible opportunity to him. Against the backdrop of an impressive career record, it was believed that patience being invested on him will pay off huge dividends late in the season.
Almost two months into the season and performance of Davis stands where it was at the beginning of the season.
With patience diminishing fast, it can be expected that he will be demoted to Minors soon. What makes this reality more likely is recovery from an injury by left-fielder Jason Bay.
Manager realises that Davis can no longer be part of the line-up. If it happens, decision about replacement will have to be made, he stated.
"If the case comes where Ike is not the first baseman here, you've got to decide who is going to be because it's not only a one- or two-day thing," Terry Collins said. "It'd be a more extended period of time.”
Meanwhile, Davis will wish to silence all the criticism being levelled at him, through a belligerent show on the plate.
With couple of home-runs in one game, he can win back confidence of the manager and can start his season journey in a new way.
