Ike Davis could be most destructive offensive player for New York Mets in 2013-MLB Feature
Even as Ike Davis had largely a poor 2012 major league season, he did enough to indicate the next year will see him become the most destructive offensive player for the New York Mets.
Despite his slump until the All-Star break, he managed to hit 32 home runs and produce 90 RBIs at the end of the season.
It is a remarkable achievement given the fact he clinched it in a short span of time. It also shows, once Davis is fit and healthy, any opposition will surrender before his horrifying onslaught.
The fact of the matter is Davis struggled initially in the season, because he was recovering from an ankle surgery. Not hundred percent fit, he failed to strike hits regularly, getting his batting average decline sharply.
Even while he floundered, the Mets did not remove him from the line-up. Disregarding the fans’ criticism, they allowed him opportunities.
The rest for a couple of days to Davis may have helped him to some extent but the Mets did not consider this option.
At the moment, Davis has recovered fully and is all set to unleash his real strength as a powerful hitter. It seems he is going to repeat his second half of the season performance of 2012 throughout the year 2013.
If this happens, it will mean he has most probably surpassed the rest of the batters in the Mets’ line-up in almost all offensive categories.
Even David Wright cannot match the frequency with which Davis can score home runs and create RBIs for the team.
Pointing out another reason of his failure in 2012, Davis believes the fact he missed playing competitive baseball for a long time before appearing in the season disallowed him to perform at potential.
"[I'm] not wondering about whether my ankle will hold up or being exhausted and just trying to get back," he said. "I lost the rhythm of the game because I was out for so long, and this year's going to be different just because I'm healthy, and I'm going
to come in with more energy and probably stronger than last."
He may not receive the media spotlight in the beginning of the 2013 season. However, as the year progresses, he will be the most watched players by the fans.
Those experts that created doubts about credentials of Davis while he struggled will be forced to revisit their parameters then.
Interestingly, Davis knows that his best time is not far.
"I'm actually super excited. I'm healthy, and hopefully I don't get some crazy disease," Davis said.
Provided he stays away from injuries, Davis is an equivalent to Wright and R.A Dickey for the Mets in 2013.
While 2012 saw only two individuals producing occasional wins for the club largely, another player will be added to the list once the upcoming season concludes.
